The longest week ever

This has been the longest week ever. I never have anywhere to go and with all the snow on the ground I had to leave the house about 2 times a day. Hopefully, I'm staying in today. The kids got their first report cards last Friday, and teacher "interviews" were this week. In the US the report cards would have been awful, but in Canada I'm not so sure they are. An A is 80-100, so it seems anything but an A isn't that good, yet the report card says that a C is showing acceptable work (that's like a gread of 50-65), B is better than acceptable, and an A is superior. And we had some B and C in things like Art and PE. And before you go saying maybe its effort in those classes, their effort was either satisfactory or excellent, so go figure! I mean seriously who gets a C in art? And this is the child that loves Art!

These pictures are to show the freezing condensation on the inside of the windows. About half-way up the foggy part is ice! Mason picks it off saying "no, no" the whole time. (That's his word for snow.)

This is the snow on the sky lights. Its starting to slide down so you can see a whole at the top where you can see through. Of course Frank didn't get to see them all covered again. He's been in Houston enjoying the weather, the food, and my family!

Thanksgiving

Well, we had our American Thanksgiving on Saturday. Dinner was good, but I did cook the turkey too long. The flavoring was quite different with that recipe I had. I'm not sure it was worth the trouble. But when dinner was over and we made a to go box for the family and it wouldn't fit in the fridge we just sat it on the front porch. I mean, its colder out there than in the fridge.

Its been snowing for two days, and this is the snow falling right now. I think there's about a foot out there now. And it turns out its awfully hard to walk in snow as I found out on the way to the bus this morning.

And do you see that strip of almost concrete at the bottom? That's where I shoveled at 8 this morning, and its almost covered. And the side to the left is where Frank had shoveled just a few hours earlier. And supposedly we are having "light snow flurries" today. Can't wait to see when it snows.

This is the snow falling the other night. You can't really see it, but it was coming down pretty fast.

By the way...

6 F is the same as -12 C.

Only November?

Ok, its 6 degrees outside. The condensation on the inside of the windows is frozen, as in there is ice inside the house! My face was burning outside. I can't believe it is going to be colder than this. I have to find out what the temp is C, because the kids won't go outside to play if its less than -24 C....surely its close now. (Oh, and the weather report to the side doesn't seem to go below 32 F, I guess they figure anything below 32 just doesn't even matter.)

I know how not to die when its 100 outside, I don't know how not to die when its negative.

And here's a kids early word I bet you haven't heard. Mason says snow, only it sounds like no, which makes it hard to understand when he's laying on the floor yelling no, no, no and there is no one or thing near him. And finally you realize he is looking at the sky light and yelling about the snow covering it!

Snow for the Bus

It was snowing this morning on the way to the bus. It was coming down pretty steady. This is our first trip to the bus while it was snowing. The kids all love the snow, but Mason wasn't too happy when it was blowing in his face. Today its a very soft snow, you can't make snowballs or snow men. The temp is 16....and its not supposed to get above freezing the rest of the week. This snow may be with us until the spring thaw!

I wish I'd had my camera because our footprints in the snow looked pretty cool, but they would have been covered by the time I could make it back out. I'll try to get pics some other time.

PS

I guess that means the kids will have to shovel/sweep the snow this afternoon. Frank is out of town, and you have 48 hours to shovel the snow on your sidewalk or.....well I guess the snow police come. And you can be sued if someone falls on your sidewalk.

Getting Ready

We spent this weekend getting up our Christmas decorations. We put the tree upstairs in the "bonus room." There's more room up there, and it will be easier to keep Mason out of it. He loves the balls! Luckily we are still pretty much all plastic except for a few on the top. Mason loved the beads too. Tyler said "Look, Mason has on his bling." He wouldn't stand still enough to take a good picture though.
We wanted everything ready because we are planning on having a big US Thanksgiving on Saturday with a family from Houston. Canada has Thanksgiving on the first Monday in October, we went to the mountains. Frank has work and the kids have school, so we have to wait until Saturday. I'm taping the parade and everything. Wish me luck with that turkey!

Downtown Lighting Ceremony

Tonight we went to the downtown lighting ceremony in Sir Winston Churchill Square. There were some games for the kids to play, the lighting ceremony, and fireworks.

The tree was over 58 feet tall with 100 strands of lights, over 7000 LED lights.

Mason got to meet Santa, although he wasn't too sure about him. And he really didn't like the fireworks.
The square is front of City Hall. They had hay rides, but the skating rink isn't quite open yet. But it was certainly cold enough. It was about 30 degrees, and we were cold!

Rodeo, Canadian Style

We went to the rodeo today! It had most of the same events as the HLSR. But there wasn't a calf scramble. Instead they had teams of kids chase after pony's and whoever could catch the horse and ride it the longest won. Of course there was also no entertainer, just rodeo. Which made the kids quite happy.
Mason wasn't too thrilled at first, but after he got his coke cup with ice in it he sat very quietly for a long time. And he loved the bull riding. He would cheer along with everyone else. And if you notice in that picture that is both the ceiling and the wall behind Frank. We were 5 rows from the top. Rexall Place holds about 16,000 people, so we weren't all that far from the bottom either. Its where the Oilers play Hockey. And this pictures shows the size of the field. The barrell racing even took up the whole arena!
Afterwards we went to "Farm fair" (the livestock show) and Dodge City (the shopping place.) It was pretty crowded so we didn't really get to look at much. It was a fun day. Of course when we got home I realized that I wasn't feeling as well as I thought and have had to spend today recuperating again.

Bath Time

Well, we had our first experience with the doctor. Very interesting. I've had a sore throat, and decided it was probably strep so I should go to the doctor. There is a "walk-in" clinic that recently openned nearby, and the neighbors said they were good. Well, they took my name and I didn't have to fill out any paperwork, they weren't concerned that I didn't have the Alberta Healthcare, and they called me back to the office before Mason and I could get our jackets off. They didn't even ask me what was wrong. There was no blood pressure check, no weigh in, no temperature check, nothing. The doctor was the first person to ask me what was wrong. He said he thought it was a virus, but did a strep test anyway. Then he said the test results would be in by Friday. Guess they don't have the rapid strep test. He said they would call in a prescription if it were positive..... To my pharmacy, which meant I had to go look up the pharmacy when I got home, just in case. Then he handed me the bill. I thought I was prepared. I saw the bill and said, this is for the whole doctor visit. He said yes, that's what Alberta Healthcare pays us. It was $32.36 (Canadian of course.) No wonder they don't have any doctors here. I assume that also included the strep test. They say all of their doctors are moving to the states. I can see why. Although, I guess I'd gladly pay the other $60 to have gotten my strep results in 10 minutes. I mean, surely I'll be dead by Friday. I did find something at the store called Strepsil. Antibacterial throat lozenges. Maybe they will work.

And these are just pics of Mason's bath tonight. His favorite thing to do is take a bath. And every time he sees a camera he says "Cheese!" and wrinkles up his nose ans squints his eyes. Even if he doesn't even know the person holding the camera. He's also learning how to talk up a storm. Too bad no one speaks his language. We're learning though. Beee means Ball. Cookie means I want to eat, not necessarily a cookie though. Cuck-ooo means cup or milk or water, or something indicated beverage. Bu means book, and we have to read it over and over again. Ka means sock. Car sometimes mean shoe, but sometimes car (his shoes have a train on them). Key means key, but sometimes it means car. And then he has the real English words: puppy, bye-bye, mommy, daddy, baby, outside, nite nite (not to be confused with no nite nite, which means I want my blanket, but I don't want to go to bed) and he sometimes gives kisses when asked. But sometimes he shakes his head no so vigorously you would think we just asked him if he wanted to eat dog poo.

Cold

Just so everyone knows.....its 8 degrees F this morning. I'm not going outside, so I can't tell you how cold that is. Its warm in the house though. And no more snow last night.

Snow, Part II

Well, it snowed again last night. And this time we got a little more. The kids have been out playing in it all day. They put on their snow suits over the pajamas and took off. It has been barely below freezing, so I'm not sure if the snow suit was completely neccessary, but at least the neighbor kids wore theirs too.

They made snow angels and snow men, and Bailey has been trying to eat all of the snow.
I worked at a Casino last night for a school fundraiser until 3 am. I came home in the snow. It was so beautiful falling in the night. I'm sure I'll change my mind about that 6 months from now when I'm tired of snow.
I couldn't decide which snow pictures were best, so here are a few more you can take a look at http://photoshare.shaw.ca/view/10305924305-1194208425-64550/

Halloween

Well, the kids got all dressed up and went out trick-or-treating last night. Mason road around in the wagon and ate chips and candy.

Grant got to go out with a friend of his from the bus stop, and Tyler went out all by himself with a friend from school. He came home with a pillow case full of goodies. Including 4 cans of soda. You know that bag was heavy! We now have more candy than a family of 5 could eat in a year, and lots of small bags of chips.
Tyler is under here. And Mason wasn't even scared of him. Although he did have the look of Well, aren't you an idiot when he saw him put the mask on. And he had a hard time figuring out why everyone kept calling him Elmo. He kept looking around for Elmo.
